Spraying
Sanding sealers
- Before - make sure moisture content is low enough
- Spray (or brush) the front face before carving
- If wood has loose grain or divots use two coats
- Let dry completely before carving
Ink / primer:
- Only a light coat is needed. Do NOT OVERSPRAY
- Assumes edges are profiled and painted
- Top at an angle
- Bottom at an angle
- Check it over carefully for lightest areas
Final finishes:
- Completely seal up the sign
- Spray the back first
- Turn over and set on painters points or tacking strips
- Spray the edges next
- Spray the front
- When completely dry apply the next coat
- Make 3 - 4 coats
- Before the last coat lightly sand with 220 to remove raised spots
- Complete the last coat
- When dry apply your label or rubber stamp ID @ contact info to the back

Sanding
- Do not run signs through any style of planer! It causes edge chip-outs and planes all surfaces evenly. Surfaces can be adjusted with a sander.
- Surface best side only to save thickness
- Reduces the width of the final cut lines
- Carving too shallow shows up here 1st
- 50 grit across grain to remove most ink
- 50 grit across the grain on back to smooth it out.
- Go with the grain removing more ink with 80 grit
- Follow up with the grain with 120 grit
Bleeding ink:
- Use blade tip for surface checks that bleed ink
- Scrape out ink and sand smooth
